Screening the movie "Chicken Run"
Saturday morning at 10.30 on the 23rd of November 2024

Kunsthall 3,14 invites audiences of all ages to a screening of the critically acclaimed animated film Chicken Run!

In this empathetic, dramatic, and humorous tale, a group of hens lives on a small farm in the English countryside, laying eggs under the control of farmers Mr. and Mrs. Tweedy. When the farmers decide to change their operations and use the hens as pie filling, an escape plan is hatched to avoid becoming part of dinner.

The optimistic flock is helped by a parachuting rooster, Rocky, who joins their efforts to break free from the farm, where they’ve been bred to be egg-laying machines. Blending humor, adventure, and a powerful message of freedom and resistance against exploitation, Chicken Run captivates both children and adults.

Chicken Run (originally released in 2000) offers a unique entry point into themes presented in The Cosmopolitan Chicken Project, an exhibition by Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen at Kunsthall 3,14.

The exhibition encourages us to reflect on chickens, an often-overlooked animal in society. Through crossbreeding different chicken populations worldwide, Vanmechelen confronts health issues stemming from inbreeding and industrial farming practices. Like many species, chickens have been bred to meet human needs, often with little regard for animal welfare. Vanmechelen’s project is a critique of modern agriculture that also mirrors human society, raising questions about identity and globalization.

Chicken Run is an inspiring tale of determination and resilience. The resourceful hens face many obstacles but find creative ways to overcome them, trying again and again until they succeed. The film has rightly earned its status as a modern classic in animation.

After the screening, you’re welcome to explore the exhibition further and discuss the film and the lives of chickens with our knowledgeable guides.

Note: Chicken Run is suitable for school-aged children. Kunsthall 3,14 will provide soft drinks and popcorn!
